The Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) is currently searching for candidates to fill the role of Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director (CEO/ED).  The BHS mission is “to bring people together in harmony and fellowship to enrich lives through singing.”  To fulfill this mission, the CEO must champion and support the BHS Strategic Vision of Everyone in Harmony which has helped make barbershop music and ensemble singing accessible to all people and has added depth and diversity to the BHS.  One of the most important responsibilities of the CEO is growth: growth in an actively engaged membership, growth in musical excellence, and growth in financial stability, so that barbershop music will continue to thrive for generations.


Key characteristics of successful CEO candidates are (including but not limited to):


Driving Organizational Growth:  Past experience and success with growth-related initiatives in the non-profit sector, which may include membership, programs, and/or revenue; Recognizing the importance of fundraising, philanthropy, and financial strategies for supporting growth; Experience assembling and leading teams or subject matter experts that have led to measurable growth.


Developing and Leading Strategic Initiatives:  Track record of developing, communicating, and leading strategic initiatives that resulted in buy-in from an organization or membership; Innovative thinking or approaches that took an organization to the next level; Compassionate and empathetic behaviors that have helped to understand the needs of an organization or membership.


Demonstrating Familiarity with Barbershop or Choral Singing:  Understanding of the current BHS organizational structure, and/or experience and leadership at the chapter or district level; Knowledge of barbershop style music or other forms of choral music; Appreciation of the nuances of barbershop culture down to the member and chapter level.


Building and Nurturing Relationships:  Positive track record of leading and empowering complex organizations and employees to successful results; Experience with board dynamics and collaborating to support a unified vision; Building and fostering partnerships with external organizations that support the organization's growth by providing resources, funding, or other opportunities.


In addition to the characteristics above, other relevant experiences and behaviors of the CEO candidates will be considered.
