POSITION: Editorial & Content Specialist
Reports To: Director of Marketing and Communications
Location: Hybrid, with Nashville, TN as base
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Summary:
The Barbershop Harmony Society seeks an Editorial & Content Specialist who combines strong editorial judgment with systems thinking to lead and scale the Society’s storytelling efforts.
This role is responsible not only for producing high-quality content, but for designing and managing content workflows that efficiently transform stories from across the Society into multi-channel communications.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer and editor who is equally comfortable managing distributed volunteer contributors, operating within structured editorial systems, and leveraging emerging tools, including AI-assisted workflows, to increase capacity and consistency.
Key Responsibilities:
The Harmonizer Magazine (50–60%)
- Lead editorial planning and production of The Harmonizer bi-monthly publication
- Develop and maintain a forward-looking editorial calendar aligned with organizational priorities
- Edit and refine submissions from members and contributors for clarity, tone, and impact
- Coordinate publication production, including layout, photo selection, and distribution
- Ensure each issue reflects high-impact storytelling and key Society initiatives
- Develop repeatable editorial workflows to improve efficiency and consistency of production
- Identify opportunities to repurpose magazine content across digital channels
Society Storytelling & Content Systems (40–50%)
- Write and produce the Society’s weekly Livewire e-newsletter using structured content workflows
- Create and update website content in Craft CMS to support programs and initiatives
- Identify, capture, and develop stories from chapters, districts, quartets, and programs
- Support internal departments with storytelling aligned to strategic priorities
- Design and maintain content intake and tracking systems to manage story pipelines
- Transform individual stories into multiple formats (newsletter, web, social, print)
- Leverage AI-assisted tools to support drafting, editing, and content scaling while maintaining BHS voice and quality standards
- Continuously improve content workflows to increase output without sacrificing quality
Contributor & Volunteer Management
- Recruit, guide, and support a network of volunteer writers and contributors
- Provide editorial direction, feedback, and coaching to improve contributor output
- Establish clear expectations and processes for submissions
- Maintain positive, mission-aligned relationships with contributors
Qualifications:
Core Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in editorial, content, or publishing roles
- Demonstrated ability to edit for clarity, tone, and audience alignment
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing content pipelines or editorial systems
- Ability to work with structured workflows, templates, and content calendars
- Experience repurposing content across multiple channels (print, email, web, social)
- Experience working with distributed contributors or volunteer-based organizations
- Comfort working with or willingness to learn AI-assisted content tools
- High-end digital photography experience with an eye for composition, lighting, and storytelling, suitable for print and digital publication, preferred
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign
- Experience with content management systems (Craft CMS, WordPress, or similar)
- Proficiency in Google Workspace
- Familiarity with AI writing and editing tools is a plus
- Experience with content tracking tools such as Airtable or Google Sheets is a plus
- Experience with Slack and Basecamp is a plus

The salary range for this position is $65,000–$68,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
